Sometime in the early 2000s, Carlton & United Breweries decided to dust off Carlton Draught and push it on young Australian men.
The first (or at least the best known) result of this was the extremely-hard-going Big Ad, which launched the tagline ‘Made from beer.’ More highlights followed: Canoe, Flashbeer, Slow Mo and the incredible Beer Chase.
Like its more ubiquitous cousin VB, Carlton leant on its heritage of laconic Aussie blokiness - but injected a millennial sense of self awareness and irony.
They were the beer ads we’d grown up with, but this time they were winking at you like ‘we know, we know, they all taste identical. But how good was Anchorman?!’
But for all Carlton’s multi-million dollar scripted ‘Made from beer’ ads, none go harder than this old footage of Angry Anderson at the 1991 AFL Grand Finals.
It’s as much a sick burn as an eternal reminder that - in advertising, at the pub, at Christmas dinner, anywhere - if you’re likeable, self-aware and know your audience well enough, you can say anything you like.
So thanks for reading, you cunts! 🤠
For those interested, here is the original footage of Angry Anderson’s performance in 1991. Also, for fairness and balance, here is a Carlton Draught ad from that era that does not go hard at all.
